FAQ
Common questions about Nova
Everything you need to know about how Nova works with Power BI, Microsoft Teams, pricing, and your existing governance model.
Frequently asked questions
Getting started, governance, credits, and what is included on every plan.
Can Nova audit a Power BI semantic model for health issues?
Yes. Nova runs read-only health checks on semantic models you can access — health score, prioritised findings across relationships, measures, columns, and governance, plus exportable audit reports. Ask audit this model in Teams. See /features/model-audit.
Can Nova help business analysts create requirements and delivery artefacts?
Yes. Nova BA Analyst turns workshop notes, transcripts, RFPs, and existing documents into structured BA packs — requirements, user stories, traceability matrices, sign-off packs, and delivery readiness assessments. Upload a file or paste notes in Teams and say BA help for the full menu. See /features/ba-analyst.
Can Nova explore semantic model metadata in Teams?
Yes. Admins and power users can ask Nova to show fields, model structure, relationships, refresh status, semantic models, and reports — without opening the Power BI service. See /features/model-exploration.
Can tenant admins audit workspace access and unused reports?
Yes. Nova tenant owners and admins can run governance commands in Teams — who has access, report usage, adoption, unused reports, workspace audits, and export governance report. See /features/workspace-governance.
Does Nova replace Power BI?
No. Nova complements Power BI by helping business users ask questions against approved semantic models inside Microsoft Teams. Dashboards and reports remain your source of governed truth — Nova makes that data more accessible through conversation.
Do I need Power BI?
Yes. Nova is designed to answer questions against approved Power BI semantic models. Your organisation needs Power BI and an approved model before Nova can return governed answers.
Can any user top up?
Yes. Any active user in your organisation can purchase a top-up from the portal billing page. Top-ups add Nova credits to your organisation balance — not to an individual user wallet.
Who can manage users?
Tenant owners and admins can manage users from the admin portal — disable access, promote admins, and review usage. Normal users can use Nova and top up but cannot manage other users.
Can I disable users?
Yes. Owners and admins can disable users from Admin → Users. Disabled users are blocked from Nova in Teams and the portal until re-enabled.
Can I use multiple semantic models?
Nova uses the semantic models your users are authorised to access in Power BI. Supported model selection depends on your tenant configuration and Teams setup.
Does Nova store my Power BI data?
No. Nova queries approved semantic models at request time within the signed-in user's permissions. It does not create a separate copy of your model data.
How does support work?
Use Support in the portal header or visit /support to create a ticket. Signed-in users see their ticket history; admins see the tenant queue; Nova operators handle escalations via support@datanovalabs.com.
How does billing work?
Nova uses usage-based Nova credits. Your organisation receives welcome usage credit on activation, consumes credits as questions are answered, and can top up online. The portal shows your Nova credit balance, subscription status, and billing period.
Can we get a bespoke package?
Yes. Enterprise and pilot customers can request bespoke commercial packages with custom included Nova credits or invoice arrangements. Contact the Nova team or book a demo.
Can I start using it today?
Yes. Click Start free, sign in with your work Microsoft account, and activate your organisation workspace. External Microsoft tenants are supported when multitenant sign-in is enabled.
Is Microsoft sign-in live?
Yes. Start free and Log in use Microsoft SSO. Sign in with your organisation work account — you do not need to be a guest in DataNova's tenant.
Is a credit card required?
No card is required to start. When your account is activated, you receive $69 free usage credit (30,000 Nova credits).
How does the $69 free credit work?
Start Free includes $69 of usage credit (30,000 Nova credits) when your organisation is activated — enough to try Nova against an approved semantic model without a card. Top up online from the portal when you need more.
Can we run a pilot first?
Yes — and we recommend it. Start with one approved semantic model for finance or operations, prove adoption in Teams, then expand. Book a demo or email the Nova team to discuss pilot onboarding.
Can Nova access all our data?
No. Nova is designed to query only approved Power BI semantic models, within the permissions of the signed-in user. It does not create an uncontrolled reporting layer or access arbitrary data sources.
How does Nova respect permissions?
Nova is designed to use Microsoft identity and preserve Power BI access controls. Users only see semantic models and data they are already authorised to access.
How is pricing calculated?
Nova uses credit-based, usage-driven pricing — not per-seat licences. Every plan includes the same features. Start Free includes $69 usage credit (30,000 Nova credits). Starter ($69/mo) includes 30,000 Nova credits per month; Business ($349/mo) includes 150,000; Enterprise ($699/mo) includes 300,000. Top up anytime ($35–$699 packs) as consumption grows.
What happens after my free credit is used?
Purchase a top-up from the portal (from $35) or subscribe to Starter ($69/mo), Business ($349/mo), or Enterprise ($699/mo). Your organisation keeps the same workspace and Teams app — only the Nova credit balance changes.
Can I upload board packs and documents in Teams?
Yes. Nova supports file upload in Teams for board pack review, summarisation, follow-up Q&A, and document search. Supported formats include PDF, Office files, spreadsheets, CSV, and common image formats. See /features/board-pack-review and /data-retention.
What is Nova's channel audience policy?
In Teams channels and group chats, Nova checks that every visible member has appropriate Power BI access before posting analytical answers. If access cannot be verified for all members, Nova fails closed — using private replies or safe guidance instead of posting data to the thread.
Are premium features included in Start Free?
Yes. Board pack review, document search, report generation, and channel security are available while your organisation has Nova credits. Premium refers to capability depth and credit consumption — not a separate product lock-out during trial.
Does Nova generate Power BI reports?
Nova can plan and generate report drafts from natural language, confirm the specification with you in Teams, and optionally publish approved reports to Power BI. See /features/report-generation.
Can Nova schedule Power BI report exports or subscriptions?
Yes. Nova supports report discovery, subscriptions, and automated PDF, PowerPoint, and PNG delivery using Microsoft's export-to-file APIs. Reports and semantic models must be hosted on Fabric, Power BI Embedded, or Power BI Premium capacity — Premium Per User (PPU) workspaces are not supported for automated export-to-file. CSV export of table results from semantic Q&A is available separately. See /features/report-exports-subscriptions.
What Microsoft capacity do I need for automated report exports?
Automated Power BI report exports and subscriptions require Fabric, Power BI Embedded, or Power BI Premium capacity. PPU and shared/Pro-only workspaces do not support Microsoft's export-to-file API for scheduled PDF, PowerPoint, or PNG delivery. DataNova can help you configure the right capacity for your rollout.
Does Nova create its own version of the data?
No. Nova is designed to query approved Power BI semantic models directly. It does not create a separate copy of your data or an uncontrolled reporting layer.
How does Nova know which semantic model to use?
Nova is designed to check the user's Power BI access and present approved semantic models. The selected model context is used to interpret questions and return relevant measures and dimensions.
Can users ask follow-up questions?
Yes. Nova is designed to support natural follow-up questions in the same Teams conversation, maintaining context from earlier answers.
Does Nova support previous year comparisons?
Yes — where your semantic model defines the relevant periods and measures. Nova can compare current results against prior year, prior month, or other configured comparisons.
Can Nova break results down by customer, product, region, or other fields?
Yes. Nova uses dimensions available in your approved semantic model to break down results by customer group, product, region, site, or other configured fields.
Do we need Microsoft Teams?
Yes. Nova is designed as a Teams-native experience. Your organisation needs Microsoft Teams for users to interact with Nova.
Who is Nova best suited for?
Nova is best suited for finance, operations, sales, leadership, and BI teams in organisations using Microsoft Teams, Power BI, and governed semantic models — especially those who want faster answers without building new dashboards for every follow-up question.
